I wrote about this issue a few years ago ( https://nataliewexler.substack.com/p/elementary-classroom-are-too-noisy ) and I'm glad to see there's now more research pointing the fact that noise can get in the way of learning.

In the US, the standard classroom format for younger students is to have them rotate through "stations," with small groups of 4-5 students taking turns working directly with the teacher while others work independently (at least in theory). Sometimes the stations require collaborative work--i.e., talking--but even if they don't, the noise level is sometimes quite high.

As I described in my post, I remember being in one raucous first-grade classroom where a tiny girl was so exasperated that she finally pleaded with her classmates to be quiet. "I can't think with all this noise!" she told them. I'm not sure we need studies to back up something even a six-year-old can perceive, but it's nice to have them.
