What if the problem goes deeper than poorly designed instruction? What if the problem goes back to the very nature of learning. Instruction originates with the teacher and no matter how tightly or scientifically we try to control for all the variables, learning originates with the very complex learner. No matter how skillfully we design the assembly line, the fact remains that learning never originates outside the learner. The saying was never “When the teacher has everything ready, the learning will occur” It’s “When the learner is ready, the teacher will appear”.

Excellent article.

While I was reading it, it made me think about the quantification of everything in life, including education. Although I'm a quant guy by nature, trying to "measure to improve" may lead to as many problems as it solves. Something to ponder ...
